Pros

Diverse, international coworkers. Interesting technical work - many opportunities to learn. Collaborative work environment. Vacation benefit is very good by US standards.

Cons

Layoffs are brutal during industry downturns. Technical ability is not insurance against layoffs. If you are not internationally mobile, your chances of promotion past first level team leader are remote. Typical big-company bureaucracy.

Pros

Excellent training, potential for fast promotion, some excellent people. It's a great chance to see the world and meet people from all over the place. It's a sink or swim kind of company, but if you can tough it out, it pays off well.

Cons

Subject to the oil market, pay cuts and layoffs are now the norm. The layoffs breed a fairly toxic work environment with constant blame games and throwing people under the bus. Depending on segment, you will not be able to plan anything ever. Terrible work/life balance. You'll end up fighting to be able to take vacation even with 3 months advance notice. Little to no transparency from upper management.

Just another number

Pros

Schlumberger offers reasonable pay and international opportunities. They are almost certainly the most prolific of the oilfield service companies which means that they have a large number of jobs in a variety of fields and locations.

Cons

With so many employees, you are just another number. Management varies from excellent to awful and you have absolutely no recourse for those that are awful. HR are probably the worst part of the company. Either you are ignored or targeted for punishment. With the recent downturn in the Oil & Gas sector, the company is looking to save money wherever possible, this extends to: - cutting training courses - cancelling parties - denying promotions - preventing all travel - laying off employees and firing them where possible.
