Fun for a while

Pros

Its a fun company to work with for a few years. Great talented people, (especially on the ground floor) and the chance to see the world.

Cons

Run by 'controllers' (what used to be called accountants). This results in a total lack of trust when it comes to money, especially in the downturn when they have senior managers as final approvers on the smallest of PO's! The Career advancement system is somewhat unique. The best way to describe it is like 'the hand of God', In short no one knows where there next move is coming from, and you cannot apply for jobs directly, (in most cases you don't even know the jobs are available). So in theory HR (personnel) pick the perfect person for each vacancy after weighing up all the possible candidates in their database, in practice it is of course all down to who you know.

Great company to work for

Pros

There are lot of highly intelligent, very interesting and hardworking people who are fun to work with. Excellent Training Programs. Potentially unlimited career opportunities. International assignments. Competitive compensation package.

Cons

A lot of people with poor or no managerial skills promoted to managers positions. As result such managers cannot motivate, inspire their teams and be a true leaders. Instead those managers don't care about people and little care about business but only care about their own objectives in order to achieve highest appraisal mark and move on. Schlumberger will be excellent company for you if you will have an excellent manager - open, honest, supportive, motivating, knowledgeable, inspiring and connected to his team, which is rare compare to selfish and egocentric careerists. Schlumberger lies about dual career support. It does not exist. Very difficult to achieve satisfactory work-life balance especially if you manage dual career in the family.

Great while it lasted

Pros

Pay and benefits are great. Most people are pretty nice. Training is great too. There are many projects going on simultaneously, so one has to find the right persons to get involved.

Cons

Fixed step programs are a challenge to compete when your day job is heavy with responsibility. Even tougher when completion was on everyone's objective. When times get tough, folks get defensive and protective of their jobs. There are lots of cliques, similar to high school. There are those who play the game, and those who don't. Wasn't around long enough to see the benefit. Take the quarterly reviews seriously, because meeting expectations may not be enough to stay employed.
