Pros

Travel, it can be fun for a while.

Cons

End of the month accounting and your boss's performance incentive bonus rules your life. You get promoted because they can earn more bonus by promoting someone. Likewise, you won't get promoted if it means their bonus will drop. Nothing matters but the reported profits and their bonus. The company is managed on a month to month basis with a long term outlook of about 3 months. They hire, fire, and transfer on a whim. I was transferred from Louisiana to Congo with 2 weeks notice, from Angola to UK with 1 weeks notice, etc, etc. Oh, and forget dual career, it only exists on paper. In reality, they use it to try to strong arm couples into taking horrible location assignments. "Oh you want to go dual career? Excellent, we can make that happen for you. We have a great position for you and your partner in Nigeria." -No thanks, I've been in Africa for a long time and would like to work elsewhere. "I see, well, we are transferring your partner to Nigeria anyway..."

Pros

I loved the Paris office- the location and surroundings were amazing. The people in my department were very friendly, and the pace of work was relaxed. We had team meetings every morning around the coffee machine with free croissants!

Cons

The set up in the office was quite old school- everyone has a separate office. I was only there for a stage, so I'm not sure what promotions were possible etc.

Pros

Work life balance international and Diversity

Cons

Schlumberger is not a software company and doesn't know how to manage software project. No efficiency, the different parts of the company are competing for personal interest and the budget goes into the salaries of the hierarchy, there are more managers than workers, I have even seen projects where there were no software engineers. The result is that the developers are not considered, that no project is really completed The company wants to appear to be agile, that employees are listened to, that it consults and negotiates with employees when in reality the employee comes last. Everything is managed the old fashioned way, the company wants to control its employees fully down to where the employee can sit, everything is decided in advance and forced through. In reality the workers are not considered, just a few examples, the layout of the offices, poor quality of the furnishings, removal of luncheon vouchers,no trust, against teleworking, no salary increase, unfair annual appraisals. The only way to get ahead is through pay-offs and cronyism. year after year company is reducing compensation and beneficts.
