Pros

Working at Kraken has been an enriching experience, blending personal well-being with professional growth. The company excels in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, ensuring that employees do not feel overwhelmed. The team at Kraken is exceptional. Colleagues are friendly, patient, and knowledgeable, always ready to lend a hand. This supportive environment fosters learning and growth, making every day at work a pleasure. One of Kraken's standout features is its freedom within the workplace. Employees are encouraged to bring new ideas to the table and have the liberty to explore different projects. This autonomy is a significant benefit of working in a scaling company. As an international company, Kraken boasts a diverse cultural mix that adds to its dynamic work environment. Collaborating with people from various backgrounds offers unique perspectives and enhances the work we do. Kraken is teeming with opportunities. With numerous projects running concurrently, there's always something new to tackle, providing a landscape ripe for professional development and personal achievement. Potential employees should note the fast-paced nature of the company. During my eight months here, the organization has undergone three restructurings. While these changes are ultimately for the better, they require a degree of flexibility and adaptability from the staff. In summary, Kraken is a fantastic place to grow your career, especially if you value cultural diversity, freedom, and opportunities to scale new heights in your professional life. The fast pace and frequent changes are part of the journey, making it an ideal environment for those who thrive in dynamic settings. Kraken is part of the Octopus Energy Group which has a strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity. The environment here is genuinely supportive and welcoming to people of all identities and orientations, which reflects in every aspect of the company culture. Additionally, Kraken is deeply committed to addressing the gender gap. Efforts to ensure equality and fairness across all levels of the company are evident and taken very seriously. This commitment to diversity enriches our work culture and brings a variety of perspectives that enhance our collaborative projects. Kraken also shows a strong dedication to environmental sustainability and the welfare of the planet. This ethical stance not only shapes the company’s operations but also aligns with the personal values of many employees, making it a fulfilling place to work for those who are conscious about their employer's impact on the world. These facets of Kraken’s culture do not just contribute to a positive work environment; they are integral to the company’s identity and operations, setting a standard for what a modern, socially responsible company can achieve.

Cons

While Kraken offers a multitude of opportunities, it's important for prospective employees to be aware of the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the company. Currently, Kraken is in a phase of reorganization and restructuring, which means many processes are still being defined. This environment is highly conducive to co-construction and innovation, as input from employees at all levels is not only welcomed but encouraged. However, this also means that patience and flexibility are crucial, as processes and team structures may change frequently. Transitioning between teams or managers is common, and you might find yourself reporting to someone in a different country. This can pose challenges but also opens up opportunities for international collaboration. To facilitate connection among global teams, Kraken supports business travel extensively. For instance, I had the chance to meet colleagues in Valencia, Milan, and London within just six months. Another aspect of working in such an international company is the reliance on remote meetings rather than face-to-face interactions. While this expands our reach and ability to work flexibly across time zones, it also means that much of our communication is virtual, which can be less personal and sometimes more challenging to manage. In conclusion, while Kraken is an exciting place to work with its rich cultural diversity and numerous growth opportunities, it also demands a high degree of adaptability and comfort with continuous change. This setting is ideal for those who thrive in vibrant, fast-paced environments and are eager to engage with a global team.

How to successfully scale up

Pros

Great place to work, great culture, great people, great tech! Developers are encouraged to learn, share with other teams and take responsibilities for their work. Trust is key at Kraken: you will try, you will make mistakes, you will fix them and get better in the process, without anyone breathing down your neck. Also I've never seen such a high proportion of female dev so if you needed another green flag, here you go!

Cons

The same things that make Kraken great can make it horrible to some: if you need to be held by the hand / told what to do every step of the way, or if you prefer to be a mere executor while all responsibilities fall to someone above, it's not for you. The company's approach to scaling up is also made of trials and frequent restructurations, so if you need a very stable environment, you may not find it here.

Pros

- Good opportunities to move around teams - Nice people to work with - Hiring and training junior/interns

Cons

- Pay is below market level, particularly when compared to companies of a similar size. - Salary and promotion discussions are awkward and sometimes discouraged. - Work can be chaotic, with often unclear roadmaps. There have been multiple cases where the scope of a project has changed just as we were about to deliver. - The lack of an HR function means all HR-related problems are handled by your manager/tech leads. Meaning tech leads often have to wear many hats which is generally unsustainable.
