Pros

Lots of talented, well educated co-workers. Get lots of responsibility and training here. Most people work in offices which have doors, about 30% in cubes. Centralized downtown location, company also pays for metro park and ride bus passes, good 401k matching, great medical insurance, and fitness club subsidy at nearby downtown ymca. Salary levels are targeted to be in 60% of big energy company ranges with another 5% to 10% added at end of year as potential bonus. Some middle level jobs have international travel opportunities.

Cons

Business environment is working against the European side of the chemicals business for the next 5 years and likely further cost cutting there will probably be felt in the US. Expecting to see cost reductions on US side in the next 12 months which will affect the average employee in areas of bonus, training, travel, salary, and staffing levels. The recent reorganization moved many people into jobs they did not prefer to have and has resulted in turnover with positions not being replaced. Some areas in US are understaffed resulting in occasional or even frequent heavy workload. Excessive amount of power points, justifications, and long term planning. Decision making is slow, even more so because of foreign management culture.

Pros

opportunities for advancement if willing to do ex-pat, fair compensation, Insurance and 401K were very good, modified flex-schedule was nice, centrally located in downtown, paid for parking or bus fare for employees who had to commute, opportunities to travel globally.

Cons

good-old-boys-club. if you don't know someone near the top of management your growth will definitely be stunted. it takes a long time to often make simple decisions (due partially to sheer size and cultural approach to various decisions). Also, advancement is possible but perception is that to get promoted into management you have to do an expat assignment (usually in france).

Good company, bad HR

Pros

Good, Solid company with good values. Good to work for.

Cons

HR is underqualified, incompetent and very manipulative. They make empty promises for future positions. Double standards, some people implement strong ethical values, some just dont. Management just throws a blind eye to this. Corruption will be a part of Total for as long as they do not implement strong discipline and do not conduct financial and procurement audits. They do not advertise career opportunities, people are employed without following a proper recruitment process and they only work through agencies.
