Pros

Excellent work/life balance and healthcare. Excellent physical working environment. Very interesting technical job and lot of skillful people. Good job and salary (at least for a researcher). If your manager is good enough, everything is just fine. Salary evolution is easily predicable and depends more on seniority than on competencies.

Cons

Frustrating bureaucracy that values politics more than everything else. Informations are spreading only from people to people, it is really difficult to just work with other units. Technical strategy is laughable and changes every year, along with cosmetics changes of the heavy management structure. The information system is way more than a disaster. You must struggle a bit to do the job your paid for. Salary evolution is easily predicable and depends more on seniority than on competencies.

Pros

- lots of holidays - salary is above market on my expertise - different businesses - different technologies - you get to travel if you want to

Cons

- lots of politics - very slow to technology changes - very slow to market changes - messy and unclear processes - completely outdated worktools - incompetent people are promoted - all promotions are based on who knows who or diploma

OK, for an IT consulting firm

Business Outlook

Pros

- Good starting salary for an IT consulting firm - Better contract than most other French consulting firms ("Métallurgie" whereas most others use "Syntec") - Good work/life balance. Barring temporary crises, most employees do 37-40 hours a week - Some good opportunities to work on interesting, large-scale projects (if you're lucky)

Cons

- Low salary rises - Non-innovative tech culture - It's still an IT consulting firm. Consultants are basically meat. - Constant management changes, yearly evaluations done by a guy/gal you've never seen before and will never see again - Which doesn't matter, because evaluations are basically uncorrelated to salary rises
