Pros

I do not recommend this company.

Cons

There is a sign outside every single Panda Express location in my city stating that they are currently hiring servers for $16-$18 per hour (they are currently doing a nation-wide hiring event). Because I have a college degree and over 20 years of customer service and food service experience, I asked for $18/hour. I went through 2 interviews and a background check before pay was ever even brought up. When I asked about it, they told me only shift leaders get $18/hour. The sign literally says SERVERS: $16-$18/hour. Does that mean a 16-year-old with no experience gets paid the same amount as a 30-year-old with years of experience? That’s not how it works. As far as I’m concerned, this is false advertising and ABSOLUTELY INTENTIONAL. Every business is struggling to find workers right now, and this is how Panda is attempting to draw people in. A typical bait-and-switch tactic. This is completely wrong and unethical. They purposely don’t bring up pay until the very end of the interview process, and then low-ball me, wasting my time and gas money. My hope is that, by making this public, I can prevent other potential applicants from wasting their time. Shame on this company!

Pros

Leading by example and inspiring your associates so that they can succeed in life.

Cons

Panda has a very extensive and time consuming hiring process. When you first apply and get a phone call, expect to not fully get hired for at least a month or two. You will most likely go through multiple interviews including, phone, in-store with managers, and OJP or on job preview. The hiring managers will talk you up about how great Panda is and how much you can earn. It would all sound very prospective and wonderful but, you will soon find out that the world of Panda is not all that it seems. Hidden within the walls there are toxic management who do not care about your well being, your life, or your concerns. This was so appalling especially since the Founders have implemented a culture in which everyone should abide by. Unfortunately this is not so. Too bad Andrew and Peggy Cherng, the owners and founders, do not know about such toxic management that is ruining the foundation they have built. I truly loved their pursuit to better peoples lives, but unfortunately it did not better my life, nor did it better lives around me. You will drive over 50 miles and over an hour and a half to work in traffic and another hour back home late at night each day. You will work over 65, and even over 70 hours some weeks with no days off. Some months you will have worked 3 to 4 weeks straight with only 1 day off. You are expected to manage the store with owner mentality without owners pay. Your body with be physically broken. My hands have nerve damage from constantly cooking and doing dishes as a manager to cover cooks. You will be thrown into new stores or stores that need your cooking skills. If you are someone who is a strong cook, they will use you until you are broken. Physically I've never been so strained and exhausted in my life. Not only that I held it all together mentally. It's a challenge you don't want to miss especially if you love military dictatorship style training. Also, be prepared to feel all the guilt when you put in your 2 weeks. They will do everything they can to keep you there, but it's already too late. Rumors are also created, not sure if they are true or not, but I later found out from a colleague that the ACO and RDO's told everyone that I was a no call no show. I could not believe it! Very disgusting. I wouldn't be surprised if they submitted false termination forms. I would never want this upon anyone. Working here if you are 18 as your first or 2nd job is fine you will learn a lot about guest service and food safety, but if you are older and looking for a career, I would highly recommend you look elsewhere. Best of luck on your endeavors.

Pros

-Great pay -Great benefits once available -MAY be promoted from within -Participating in store opening will leave you tired, but you will make a lot of money. -Veterans/reserves are pretty much guaranteed a management position

Cons

-You either have a manager that knows what they are doing or some neophyte who either a.) Worked as managers somewhere else, got the management position immediately, and don't know how Panda operates or b.) Got rushed thru the management training because Training Managers get paid bonuses based on how many managers they pass. -You may and will be asked to clean EVERYTHING. Good luck if corporate decides to visit your store and your manager does not keep up with the cleaning. -With a three-strike rule, you may be fired on any given day for any little thing if they don't think you'll work out. From showing up one minute late to wearing your name tag crookedly. -Middle management is drowning in so much money they are entirely separated from day-to-day workings. They are concerned with keeping up appearances and checking boxes to keep receiving their bonuses. Someone on middle management didn't know how to cook according to the recipe. -Blatant racism. Asian workers are either accommodated or moved to higher positions faster (esp. if you're Chinese) while black people are usually thrown into dishwasher/sides. -Blatant sexism. This goes almost side-by-side with the racism. Females will be pushed to higher levels and promoted quicker than the male counterparts. Males will be put on kitchen duty with little regard to experience. In my experience female managers were treated like daughters by middle management while male managers were put down or talked down more critically. -Rampant sexual harassment. With such tedious work environment, you either learn to appreciate and build camaraderie or socially get left behind. Unfortunately, some people don't have clear boundaries. Women can be manipulative and guys will hit on or encourage flirting with both employees and customers. -Violation of rules. When you onboard, you will be asked to sign a meal waiver. If you work at a busy or poorly-managed location, you'll probably end up either not eating or eating until the store closes (which will most likely set you back on closing duties). I refused to sign the waiver, yet I constantly missed meals. When I would report it to HR, I was told that continuing to work was the same as waiving your meal, that I didn't HAVE TO eat. One of our sister stores had a minor working pretty much full-time split between two stores. Again this is solely on my experience but better warned than waste time.
