Pros

Large Company. Decent benefits. East Orlando traffic is very reasonable. Very flexible with work time. Good work/life balance. Large company makes finding other opportunities better, though that is subject to your supervisors' approval.

Cons

Abysmal growth opportunity. It's easy to get comfortable at your position and let your career stagnate for decades to come. Forced rankings. Too much bureaucracy. Very hierarchy-based, discussion is encouraged, but good luck on making real meaningful changes to existing infrastructure/processes. Managers tend to make a lot of decisions with no real engineering basis at all. Your direct managers are generally pretty good, but higher level management can be a real tough nut to crack. Finally, in the last 7 years, there have been layoffs every single year throughout the company, so if you're looking for stability, this is not where you'd want to go, especially considering Congress is so polarized these days.

Pros

It's a very large company with many locations so there is opportunity to move around. They offer good health benefits, 401K with company match, capital accumulation plan in lieu of a pension, tuition reimbursement, lots of vacation time plus floating holidays, flexible schedules (flex 40 or 9/80), and salary is generally competitive. Some positions allow employees to work remotely from home on a situational basis. The company offers formal training programs & career development. SPOT awards and Special Recognition Awards are available to individuals and teams for exceptional performance. Employees support very important missions and the company is dedicated to community service and military support. LM takes ethical matters seriously.

Cons

LM is large, bureaucratic, slow moving, and political. The industry relies heavily on government funding and many areas of the business have had to contend with shrinking budgets. While the company itself is stable (stock price is at an all-time high) individual programs are not. Jobs end when contracts do. The company has frequent re-orgs which is a regular source of disruption. LM likes to tout "one company, one team" but there are some inconsistencies across the different business areas and they are constantly in competition with one another. The performance appraisal system is very flawed. Employees set their own individual commitments and are then ranked and placed into a forced distribution. (This method should only be applied if everyone is being rated against the same set of commitments.) The "good ol boys" network still exists at LM and management will take care of their buddies over top performers. The company advertises Full Spectrum Leadership (Shape the Future, Build Effective Relationships, Energize the Team, Deliver Results, and Model Personal Excellence, Integrity & Accountability) yet there are so many leaders who do not embody the FSL characteristics and they get rewarded for it! It's appalling.
