Pros

IBM Research has some really smart people working on very interesting problems. There is a lot of freedom to work on our own ideas, which leaves us responsible for our own success and failure. There is also a lot of freedom in work/life balance -- I don't know anyone who has the same freedoms that I have (working from home when I want, travel, etc).

Cons

Politics often define which research projects ultimately fail and succeed, and you have to learn to play the game. It can be quite difficult to get a good project into product. Salary and benefits used to be very good, though they have been tightening in the last few years.

Pros

Good benefits and great opportunities. The company is really big so if you dont like a work location or a specific job. You can always search for new jobs around the company and move on. They are very into working remotely and that will work for some people. Also, IBM has really good health benefits, diversity resources and a really good 0% tolerance rule. That could be good depending on the situation

Cons

Working at IBM is really good maybe the only downside is that is a really big company and you can get lost if you are trying to search for something in particular

Pros

Benefits are great, work-life balance can be good if you're an efficient worker with a good manager and you leverage that.

Cons

IP Agreements are extremely restrictive given the size of the company. Since IBM is into so many different areas of development, much of what you may be interested in working on externally they could reasonably claim ownership of. Your group may not work on anything remotely close to what you want to work on in your personal time, but IBM can still claim ownership of it because it falls under the wide open umbrella of the entire company's "actual or anticipated" business interests.
