Pros

Looks good on the resume Some very talented people work at this company Tremendous resources that can be brought to bear - financial, talenetd people, geographic reach, technology

Cons

Old boy network - very hard to break into Consulting business model is broken - billable utilization target is 95%!! In GBS people are commodities to be hired out on ANY project irrespecive of whether or not it fits your skills and interests In GBS salaries are usually lower than the market Most leaders are rewarded based solely on business generated - no incentive to look after their people or invest in innovation

Pros

- Opportunities to work at some of the best companies in the world. - Consulting teams and practices in different regions of the world can and do work well together responding to a potential client's RFP and performing a client engagement (better than comparable competitors) - Outstanding relationship with SAP. SAP often pushes the client to work with IBM as the systems integrator.

Cons

- IBM now stands for "I'm By Myself" & "Impersonal Business Management" and that is how it feels to work here. - Promotions in the more senior ranks are heavily skewed towards resources that implement SAP and that came from PWC or were recruited from the outside post-PWC acquisition. If your area of expertise and/or legacy is otherwise, you have a tough time getting past engagement manager. - This is not a management consulting practice. This is an SAP (first) and Oracle (second) ERP software implementation machine. - Base pay and bonuses are very poor (when compared with competitors).

Pros

There are many different areas in such a big organization. The people actually doing the work (versus management and Executives) are mostly very competent and cooperative. Workers are knowledgeable, driven and cooperate to get things accomplished often with mandated "free" overtime for the sake of productivity improvements. The productivity is not measured based on hours worked - only the cost of the salary, etc are accounted for. There is training and reasonable room for advancement at first. An okay place to start your career or work a short time before you are taken for granted.

Cons

Do not expect much in the way of ongoing compensation. The management philosophy appears to include: moving as much work as possible offshore, drive the people into the ground - they can be replaced, don't compensate well as the workers should be grateful to have a job, and at all costs maximize executive compensation. Layoffs are regular (or as they like to call them "Resource Actions") even when the company is announcing great accomplishments to shareholders. It is very difficult to get time or approval for ongoing professional training since the company is almost always in some sort of "cost freeze". It is not unusual to go years without being able to take a course. Expect any education to be on your own cost and on your own time. It can also be years without getting any raises. Their stated goal is pay a little above average for the industry. The management focus seems to be on how to cut benefits, rework the salary plans to the detriment of the workforce and in some cases implement salary cuts which are not offset by the supposed improved way of handling things. If you are not early in your career, do not expect much.
