I applied in-person. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Tesla (Fremont, CA) in Jun 2018
Interview
An in-house Tesla recruiter reached out to me for the Production Associate or Material Handler position. During the phone screen, questions were based on common sense, teamwork, work ethic, and having passion for Tesla. Recruiter was very friendly, and gave me positive feedback moving forward in the interview that I was answering his questions well. I was given the green light and scheduled a walk in interview for the following week.
The second part of the interview process was going to the Tesla Orientation center in Fremont to fill out a personality test. There were about 100 multiple choice questions, that asked how you function as a team player or leader, deal with conflict, stress and deadlines, and being put on the spot to do work for others while managing your own workload.
Afterwards, we scheduled an interview the following week, and were told that we would talk with a supervisor from one of the Production Lines and to bring two copies of our resume and dress business casual.
The supervisor interview was scheduled to last about 15-20 minutes. He went over my resume and asked some questions about each line to verify that I knew what I claimed to have done in the past. He asked some general questions about leadership and teamwork, as well as about my feelings for Tesla and Elon Musk. The questions are challenging to be put on the spot for, but easy if you have practiced writing about past leadership and teamwork experience. I was nervous and didn't respond as articulately as I wanted, but I could tell that he wanted to move forward with me anyway because I had a decent brain and work ethic, and Tesla badly needed people to build their Model 3.
We went outside and an HR person gave us a verbal offer and congratulated us. Our hiring was pending a drug and background test, and passing a physical. The physical was scheduled a couple weeks later. The physical took a couple hours, where a physical trainer tested everything from our blood pressure, heart rate, and motor abilities (push up, sit up, lift a box and put it on the shelf and put the box back down).
Six weeks later from the initial recruiting to passing the physical, I finally got an email saying that I was clear to board and asked to confirm when I could start.
