I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Slack
Interview
An exercise to use Slack developer platform, followed by phone interview and onsite interviews and finally a culture fit interview after onsite. Overall 7-8 rounds approx excluding the recruiter round. Interview process moved very quickly.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
There was a detailed System design question which spun off from my existing design , followed by coding questions and a detailed architecture diagram of an application built off Slack platform. There were questions from engineering skills too including monitoring, logging, devops.
I applied through other source. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Slack (San Francisco, CA) in May 2018
Interview
Hiring seems to be competitive inside the company where it becomes clear to the candidate that there is infighting. The recruiter was trying really hard to only limit my application to the team they support. They went over some usual recruiter questions. They showed a lot of excitement but only in terms of the position they were supporting. When I asked about a different position I could sense evasion.
After a week the recruiter calls back telling me I do not have the right skills. This was hilarious. The company is struggling with culture and values it seems.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Slack in Mar 2018
Interview
1. Recruiter reached out; she was friendly and helpful. Had a great conversation.
2. Take-home challenge - took about a week (~15h). I actually thought the challenge was pretty fun, relevant, and creative. Specs were detailed and the team was responsive when I had questions. I didn't receive any feedback about my code, but they let me know that I passed very quickly.
3. Call with the hiring manager - this is where things went downhill. The hiring manager was cold, dismissive, and even laughed at my questions about team dynamics and culture fit. Since the recruiter did not have a specific team/manager in mind for me when I started the process, I wonder if the manager I spoke with was interested in my background in the first place.
If Slack didn't pride itself on having an "empathetic" culture, I wouldn't bother writing a review - but my experience with Slack was one of the worst out of all the companies I interviewed with (a mix of big and mid-size). Perhaps it was just a bad fit with that hiring manager, but I would've preferred to find out that I'm not a good fit before spending ~15h of my own time on a take-home assignment.
