I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Capital One (San Jose, CA) in Jun 2026
Interview
The Capital One Lead AI Engineer interview process is a highly structured, 4-stage evaluation designed to test both technical depth and business acumen. It begins with an initial recruiter screening call and a specialized online coding assessment focusing on data structures, algorithms, and SQL.Following a hiring manager technical deep-dive, candidates move to the final "Power Day." This intensive loop consists of four distinct, back-to-back panels: a machine learning coding round, an end-to-end AI/ML system design session, a business case study, and a behavioral leadership evaluation. The entire process is heavily standardized, testing your ability to deploy scalable AI systems under strict financial regulations.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Outline an end-to-end explainability and fairness mitigation report for a credit-lending classification model to be shared with corporate risk and federal regulators.
3 rounds of casing interviews. Very math heavy and quantitative. Cases got more complicated with each level and longer than average interviews. 1 hour for each. Very little behavioural focus
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Capital One (Washington, DC) in Jun 2026
Interview
I had a recruiter screen followed by a hiring manager interview. After the hiring manager interview, they made me take a ridiculous personality test, and the recruiter said I had failed with no explanation or insight into what they were screening for and why I specifically failed.
Overall this was a pretty bad process with limited insight or accountability from HR.
