Pros

- Nice coworkers (Depending on location of course) - In most if not all Illinois locations the pay starts out at least $2.00 more than minimum wage. - One can receive paid time off( even though it takes about a year). - Discounts on products, gratis(free beauty products each month), and free samples. - An opportunity to be educated on various brands, learn techniques for makeup and skincare.

Cons

-SECRET SHOPS!!!!!!! CSE customer service evaluations at least 4 per month at the Sephora Inside JCPenney location I work at, I believe locations outside of JCPenney receive surveys instead. The CSE scores are taken way too seriously, even though they are just suppose to be learning/training tools. They store wants you to remember and perfom at least 20 different things for the customer as well as show them around the whole store. This means every customer that comes in, we have to constantly bug and check up on, and this actually annoys many customers, it doesn't help them. If a consultant receives a CSE score of less than 86 out of 101 or 85% they have to be put through embarassment by having it showed around to each coworker with comments written on it by the management as well as have their job is threatened by a stupid questionarre filled out by a stranger that is not trained to be a professional secret shopper.A completely unfair/unneccesary evaluation. - The management does not like giving time off if it is inconvenient for them or clashes with time that they want off. - Sephora Inside JCPenney locations don't redeem the birthday emails, or give out Sephora brand gift cards, only JCPenney location gift cards, and the store carries far less brands than an outside location. This pisses some customers off.

Pros

The training Sephora provides is amazing and generous. Sephora is always keeping up with what's new, so you are always aware of a new product launching.

Cons

Just because you love the beauty industry, doesn't mean you don't have to conform to basic retail life and some of us are just not cut that way. I care about providing knowledge to my client and getting them the right product, I don't care about sales goals and stupid survey scores. Don't you dare call in!! You could be spiking a fever and vomiting, but if you call in, the attitude you will get from the manager is rude and uncalled for. I understand that means management has to rearrange things because you won't be there to cover your zone, but seriously! We're human and sometimes things happen so we have to call out...how about a little understanding!!

Pros

If you love assisting others with color/makeup, skin, hair and body care, then of course Sephora is for you. If you have a chance to stay on with them, then learning about the various vendors' products is a plus too, not to mention gratis when you're full time. Sure you get gratis, but any client that comes in the store gets the same. If you're permanent at least you have the chance to get full size gratis as an employee, and if you're put through that vendor's training. But as seasonal, you get NO training and NO SOS.

Cons

I really thought that as a Seasonal employee I would be taken seriously. I wasn't even put through an orientation. Not to mention that managers did not communicate things clearly to everyone. It was as if they assumed you knew unless you asked. I was even asked to lie about why I was hired when upper management was doing a walkthrough, not once, but twice! I found it very odd that nobody was willing to take the short amount of time to explain the basic things needed to be known when you're a new employee. Some things one can figure out on their own, but even being "buddied up" didn't work out. The first day I was pretty much on my own because the other girl in my department was busy. I don't blame her, but I do blame management for not being more considerate. During my time as a seasonal employee, I was never late once, always clocked in on time, and never called in sick. I even took shift changes on short notice. I had multiple in-store clients give me plenty of compliments, but didn't make a difference one bit when it came time to potentially hire seasonal. I found out with 2 days notice when my last day would be. Not what I would call professional, but that's how Sephora is. I also found out they were hiring although they let go of all seasonal staff who had been at the store for 2 months. How much sense does that make? None. Would not recommend working at Sephora unless you really want to, but I am sure each location is different. I think corporate should make note that there are definitely some odd things going on when a seasonal employee is asked to lie about what they were hired for. Not even sure why. I just know if someone were to ask me, I wasn't going to lie. I don't believe in it, and I think some managers needed to do better in communicating and being part of a team. If Cast Members are expected to act a certain way, DICs and specialists should too.
