Pros

Interesting, unique work. Flexible schedules. You get to experience really awesome space programs, whether for defense of scientific purposes.

Cons

Bureacracy, good old boys network. Very long design cycles - 10 plus years for a project. The company is full of middle management. Not much opportunity to advance quickly. Promotions mainly based on years of experience. Difference in compensation raises for excellent performers and average performers just fractions of a percent. Expect two to four percent annual raises, no bonuses or stock options. Be prepared to spin your wheels not doing much for years. Can be frustrating if you like to accomplish tasks.

Pros

The people there are great to work with. You have your independence, but still are able to ask for help when needed. The campus there is very nice, with a cafeteria. Benefits are top notch. Managers there treat you with a lot of respect, and I always felt like part of a team. There seemed to be a great work/life balance, and you get plenty of vacation days.

Cons

For me, the compute was very long. On the finance side they didn't seem to have it all together because they are an engineering company. Didn't seem like the opportunities to advance were clear cut.

Pros

The company is not going anywhere. Easy to get the required resources to do your work, if you are working in an important enough arena. Company reputation is quite good. Name recognition is also good. Generally the level of professionalism is wonderful. Non-union advancement and pay increases make sense and are mostly fair. Movement within the company is encouraged. Starting to more liberally embrace telecommuting and work from home. Great work life balance. Good tuition reimbursement 15k/yr for MS. Many locations throughout the country and world. Even if your program gets cut, if your are a good employee they can and will find you a position. Given upcoming percentage of retiring employees (~50% in the next 10 years are at retirement age) career advancement opportunity is very high.

Cons

Cumbersome routines and traditions. Lots of older employees quite set in their ways. Union tech positions are set up for the average performer as a lifelong job, far too stagnant. Tech pay is lower than other companies for the same type of work. General resistance to the value that open source technology can bring to the table. Percentage of truly incompetent workers that get shuffled or promoted away from their continual failures.
