9/80 work week rocks but stock options would go a long way towards retaining young talent.

Pros

Lockheed Space Systems has a terrific work-life balance. Three weeks of vacation is standard for all employees plus holidays. The 9/80 work week is wonderful; you get every other Friday off!

Cons

There is a lot bureaucracy that can make getting anything done very difficult. The publishing of research is discouraged by the legal department. Promotions hard to earn and based entirely on the employee's age, not skills nor knowlege nor talent. There are many near-retirees in trumped-up roles that contribute little. A lot of great, young engineers start their careers at Lockeed then quickly jump ship when they see miniscule raises and no opportunites.

Pros

The money. I negotiated a big boost in pay along with a nice signing bonus when I went BACK to the company. Challenging work, which can make things interesting, frustrating, or both.

Cons

Cannot load software onto your own computer, plus you have to justify any software you want the company to buy. Not quite sure whether or not your being watched . . . or when . . . Highly bureaucratic. Regularly gives PAC money to politicians.

- Work till retirement, solid employment - Some great people to work with - Benefits are exceptional - Flexible work schedule, if position allows it - Better than Boeing

Cons

- Senior management is a mirror of customer structure (inefficiency) - Promotions and company growth dictated by business group, not engineering personnel - Product cycle is 20+ years - No room to venture into other specialties in engineering due to difficulty in moving laterally
