To date, no treatment can slow or stop the progression of Parkinson's disease or multiple system atrophy, two neurodegenerative diseases linked to the accumulation of alpha-synuclein in the brain. Therapeutic solutions capable of modifying the natural progression of the disease are now highly anticipated.
Our ambition is to develop a disease-modifying therapy (DMT) for these two diseases that slows or even stabilizes their progression by restoring the ability of affected cells to degrade misfolded alpha-synuclein proteins and their aggregates which contribute to neuronal death.
This DMT would profoundly transform patient care by targeting the cause and the progression, rather than just the symptoms. It would slow neurodegeneration, preserving motor and cognitive functions for longer. Patients would thus maintain a better quality of life and prolonged independence.
Initial in vivo data indicate that our drug candidate has a neuroprotective effect. This project was born from a collaboration between the Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases (IMN) and the laboratory of organic polymer chemistry (LCPO) in Bordeaux.
